It is time to choose a new doormat, but where do you start? In this blog, we explain the different types of indoor mats available, which applications they are most suited to and which doormat best fits your situation. Choosing the right indoor mat has never been easier!

The difference between an outdoor and an indoor mat

Outdoor mats are sturdy – this is essential, as they need to hold up in all weather conditions. The structure of outdoor mats is coarse, allowing them to scrape dirt from your shoes so you enter the home or premises with less dirt on your footwear.

An indoor mat is, as the name suggests, for indoor use. The advantage of a good indoor mat is that it effectively absorbs dirt and moisture. This protects your floor and keeps it clean.

Scraper mats and drying mats and how they work

Hamat offers an extensive range of indoor mats. To keep things clear, all mats are divided into different categories, including scraper mats and drying mats.

The difference between a scraper mat and a drying mat lies in the material, function and properties. While a drying mat dries the soles of your shoes as you come inside, a scraper mat actually cleans your shoes.

Scraper mats are generally made from a harder fibre, making them a sturdy mat with a long lifespan. The open structure allows dirt to disappear into the mat. A mat made from polyamide (PA) also absorbs moisture effectively. Using a scraper mat protects the floor and reduces the risk of damage and scratches.

Drying mats absorb a large amount of moisture in addition to dirt. This prevents wet footprints indoors, extends the lifespan of your floors and provides optimal floor protection. The hallmark of a drying mat is its highly absorbent capacity, achieved through the materials used. Primarily polyester and/or cotton yarns are used. The combination of the cut pile and open fibre allows the mat to quickly absorb moisture. When the mat needs washing, the drying mat can easily be laundered in the washing machine at a maximum of 30 degrees.

Useful things to keep in mind

The choice of mat depends on the purpose and how it will be used. Is the mat only used to dry shoes and collect residual dirt, or does thorough cleaning need to take place? In the first case, a drying mat is sufficient. If shoes need to be thoroughly cleaned, a scraper mat is preferable, as these have greater scraping power.

Outdoor and indoor mat combination

For the best results and maximum protection, we recommend always choosing both an outdoor and an indoor doormat. The outdoor doormat scrapes the worst dirt and moisture from the shoe sole, after which the indoor doormat dries and cleans them.
